Acid attacks (also called vitriol attacks) are relatively rare in the United States, with approximately 100 reported incidents per year. This translates to an annual probability of about 1 in 3.3 million. The US rate is far lower than in countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Cambodia, where hundreds to thousands of attacks occur annually.

In the US, acid attacks typically occur in the context of domestic violence, personal disputes, or hate crimes. The substances used include sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and caustic alkalis (such as lye). Injuries can include permanent scarring, blindness, respiratory damage, and psychological trauma. Treatment often requires multiple surgeries over years and extensive rehabilitation.

Several states have enacted or strengthened laws specifically addressing acid attacks, with penalties including extended prison sentences and mandatory restitution for medical costs. Access to concentrated acids has not been restricted in the US as it has in some other countries. The Acid Survivors Trust International provides support for victims globally. Medical advances in skin grafting, facial reconstruction, and 3D bioprinting of skin tissue have improved outcomes for survivors.
