LOW RISKPER EVENT

Probability of Identity Theft While Traveling Abroad

~2%

Per-event probability in Global

About 2% of international travelers experience some form of identity theft or financial fraud during their trip.

|Type: GOVERNMENT

Surveys by travel security firms estimate that approximately 2% of international travelers experience some form of identity theft or financial fraud during their trip. The risk is higher in certain regions: Southeast Asia, parts of Europe (particularly tourist-heavy areas), and South America report higher rates of card skimming and pickpocketing targeting travelers.

The most common forms of travel-related identity theft include credit card skimming at ATMs and point-of-sale terminals, theft of physical documents (passports, wallets), public WiFi interception, and hotel safe compromise. Travelers are particularly vulnerable because they are in unfamiliar environments, may be distracted, and often use unsecured WiFi networks.

Prevention measures include notifying your bank of travel plans, using RFID-blocking wallets, avoiding public WiFi for financial transactions (using a VPN instead), making copies of important documents stored separately from originals, monitoring accounts frequently during travel, using contactless payment when possible, and being aware of common scam techniques in your destination.
