MEDIUM RISKLIFETIME

Probability of Dying Before Age 50

5.88%

Lifetime probability in US

About 5.88% of Americans die before reaching age 50, with men facing roughly twice the risk of women.

|Type: GOVERNMENT

According to SSA actuarial life tables, approximately 5.88% of Americans die before reaching age 50. The probability is significantly higher for males (about 7.5%) compared to females (about 4.2%). This means about 94% of Americans born today will reach their 50th birthday.

The causes of death shift as people age. In the 25-44 age range, the leading causes include unintentional injuries (drug overdoses, motor vehicle crashes), suicide, homicide, heart disease, and cancer. Drug overdose deaths have risen dramatically due to the opioid epidemic, making accidental poisoning the leading cause of death for adults under 50.

Factors that most strongly influence whether someone will live to 50 include avoiding substance abuse (especially opioids and heavy alcohol use), not smoking, wearing seatbelts, avoiding dangerous occupations, managing mental health, and maintaining basic cardiovascular health. The gap between male and female mortality is partly explained by higher male rates of risk-taking behavior, substance use, violence, and occupational hazards.
