MEDIUM RISKLIFETIME

Probability of Dying Before Age 65

15.3%

Lifetime probability in US

About 15.3% of Americans die before reaching age 65, the traditional retirement age. This varies dramatically by demographics.

|Type: GOVERNMENT

According to SSA actuarial data, approximately 15.3% of Americans die before reaching age 65, meaning about 84.7% will survive to the traditional retirement age. The probability is significantly higher for males (about 18.7%) compared to females (about 11.9%).

Between ages 50 and 65, the causes of death shift toward chronic diseases. Cancer becomes the leading cause of death in this age group, followed by heart disease, chronic liver disease, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and diabetes. Behavioral factors accumulated over decades, such as smoking, obesity, heavy drinking, and physical inactivity, begin to take their greatest toll in this period.

This statistic has important implications for retirement planning. About 1 in 6 Americans will not live to collect Social Security retirement benefits (full benefits begin at age 67 for those born after 1960). This argues for both adequate life insurance during working years and not deferring all enjoyment until retirement. Racial and socioeconomic disparities in life expectancy mean these probabilities vary substantially across populations.
