|Type: GOVERNMENT

Approximately 4,000 civil jury verdicts of $1 million or more are awarded each year in the United States, out of roughly 150,000 civil trials. This means about 2.7% of civil trials result in a seven-figure award. However, only a small fraction of disputes ever reach trial (about 3-5% of filed cases), with the vast majority settling or being dismissed beforehand.

The areas most likely to produce large verdicts include medical malpractice, product liability, commercial disputes, personal injury (especially trucking and industrial accidents), and wrongful death. "Nuclear verdicts" (awards of $10 million or more) have increased significantly in recent years, with about 300-400 per year. The largest jury verdicts in history have exceeded $10 billion, though these are almost always reduced on appeal.

Importantly, the initial jury verdict often does not reflect the final amount paid. About 30-40% of million-dollar verdicts are reduced by the judge (through remittitur) or on appeal. Many more are settled for reduced amounts during the appeal process. The median ratio of final payment to initial verdict is about 0.55-0.65 for large verdicts. The rise in large verdicts has contributed to increased insurance premiums, particularly in commercial transportation, healthcare, and product liability.
