Probability of Dying as a Pedestrian in a Vehicle Crash
1 in 161
Lifetime probability in US
The lifetime odds of dying as a pedestrian struck by a vehicle are about 1 in 161. Pedestrian deaths have been rising.
Pedestrian fatalities from motor vehicle crashes have increased significantly over the past decade. The National Safety Council estimates the lifetime odds of dying as a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle at approximately 1 in 161. In 2022, an estimated 7,508 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes.
Factors driving the increase include the proliferation of SUVs and light trucks (which are more lethal to pedestrians than smaller cars), smartphone distraction for both drivers and pedestrians, inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, and higher vehicle speeds. Pedestrian deaths are disproportionately concentrated in low-income communities with fewer sidewalks and crosswalks.
Pedestrians can reduce risk by using crosswalks, making eye contact with drivers, wearing reflective clothing at night, staying on sidewalks, avoiding distractions (phones), and never assuming a driver sees you. Communities can improve safety through traffic calming measures, better lighting, pedestrian refuge islands, and lower speed limits in urban areas.
