LOW RISKANNUAL

Annual Probability of Injury for Gig Workers

~5%

Annual probability in US

About 5% of rideshare and delivery gig workers experience a work-related injury each year, often without workers' compensation coverage.

|Type: GOVERNMENT

Gig economy workers (rideshare drivers, delivery workers, freelancers) face unique occupational safety challenges. Studies estimate that approximately 5% of rideshare and delivery gig workers experience a work-related injury annually, including motor vehicle accidents, assaults, and repetitive stress injuries.

The most significant risk for gig drivers is motor vehicle accidents: rideshare and delivery drivers spend significantly more time on the road than average, increasing their exposure. Uber and Lyft drivers face an estimated accident rate about 2-3 times higher than the average driver due to distraction from the app, unfamiliar routes, and time pressure. Delivery workers face additional risks from rushing, carrying heavy items, and navigating in all weather conditions.

A critical gap exists in protection: gig workers are typically classified as independent contractors and are not covered by workers' compensation. Most personal auto insurance policies exclude commercial driving activities, creating coverage gaps. While Uber and Lyft maintain insurance policies that cover accidents during active rides, coverage during the waiting period (app on but no ride) is more limited. Some states have begun requiring gig companies to provide occupational accident insurance for their workers.
