MEDIUM RISKANNUAL

Probability of Being Injured in a Car Crash (Annual)

1 in 125

Annual probability in US

About 1 in 125 Americans is injured in a motor vehicle crash each year, totaling roughly 2.5 million injuries annually.

Motor vehicle crashes injure approximately 2.5 million Americans each year, translating to an annual probability of about 1 in 125, according to NHTSA data. While fatal crashes receive the most attention, non-fatal injuries cause enormous suffering and economic costs, estimated at over $340 billion annually.

The most common crash injuries include whiplash (neck strain), concussions and traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, lacerations, back injuries, and internal organ damage. Even relatively minor crashes can cause chronic pain conditions. About 39,000 crash survivors per year sustain spinal cord injuries or traumatic brain injuries resulting in permanent disability.

Seatbelt use is the most effective protection, reducing the risk of serious injury by about 50%. Other protective measures include proper child safety seat use (reduces injury by 71-82% for young children), choosing vehicles with high IIHS safety ratings, avoiding impaired or distracted driving, maintaining a safe following distance, and adjusting driving to weather conditions. The adoption of advanced driver assistance systems (automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning) is also reducing crash severity.
