LOW RISKANNUAL

Annual Probability of Brain Aneurysm Rupture

~1 in 33,000

Annual probability in US

About 30,000 Americans suffer a ruptured brain aneurysm each year, with a fatality rate of about 40%.

A brain aneurysm is a bulging, weakened area in the wall of a brain artery. Approximately 6.5 million Americans (about 1 in 50) have an unruptured brain aneurysm. Each year, about 30,000 people in the US suffer a ruptured brain aneurysm (subarachnoid hemorrhage), equating to roughly 1 in 10,000 people annually.

Ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal in about 40% of cases, and of those who survive, about 66% suffer some permanent neurological deficit. Risk factors include smoking (the strongest modifiable risk factor), hypertension, family history, age over 40, and female sex (women are 1.5 times more likely to have aneurysms than men).

Most unruptured aneurysms never rupture and are discovered incidentally during imaging for other conditions. Treatment options for unruptured aneurysms include surgical clipping and endovascular coiling. The decision to treat depends on the aneurysm's size, location, shape, and the patient's age and health status.
