LOW RISKANNUAL

Annual Probability of Eating Recalled Food

~15%

Annual probability in US

About 15% of Americans unknowingly eat recalled food products each year. The FDA issues about 400 food recalls annually.

The FDA and USDA issue approximately 400-500 food recalls per year in the United States, involving products that may cause health problems due to contamination, mislabeling, or undeclared allergens. Studies suggest that about 15% of Americans unknowingly consume recalled food products each year, as many consumers are unaware of recalls or have already consumed the product before the recall is announced.

The most common reasons for food recalls include undeclared allergens (about 35% of recalls), pathogen contamination (Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, accounting for about 30%), foreign objects (about 10%), and mislabeling. Produce, processed foods, and meat/poultry products are the most frequently recalled categories.

The recall process can be slow: on average, 57 days pass between the detection of a food safety issue and the public recall announcement. By that time, much of the product may already have been consumed. Consumers can sign up for FDA and USDA recall alerts, check the FDA recall database, and register product warranties to receive direct notifications. The economic impact of food recalls on the food industry exceeds $10 billion per year.
