Lifetime Probability of Any Anxiety Disorder
~31.6%
Lifetime probability in US
About 31.6% of American adults will experience any anxiety disorder at some point, making it the most common mental health condition.
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions in the United States, with a lifetime prevalence of approximately 31.6% according to the National Comorbidity Survey. In any given year, about 19.1% of adults (48 million people) have an anxiety disorder. Women are about twice as likely as men to be affected.
Anxiety disorders encompass several conditions: specific phobias (12.5% lifetime prevalence), social anxiety disorder (12%), generalized anxiety disorder (5.7%), panic disorder (4.7%), agoraphobia (1.3%), and separation anxiety disorder (0.9%). Many people have more than one anxiety disorder, and anxiety frequently co-occurs with depression (about 60% overlap).
Despite being highly treatable, only about 36.9% of people with anxiety disorders receive treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most evidence-based psychotherapy, achieving significant improvement in 50-75% of patients. SSRIs and SNRIs are effective first-line medications. Benzodiazepines provide rapid relief but carry addiction risk and are no longer recommended for long-term use. Exercise, mindfulness meditation, and stress management techniques are effective complementary approaches.
