Approximately 10-15% of all newborns in the United States are admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), totaling about 400,000 babies per year. The average NICU stay is about 13 days, though stays can range from hours to months depending on the condition.

The most common reasons for NICU admission include prematurity (the leading cause), respiratory distress, low birth weight, jaundice requiring phototherapy, infections, birth defects, and complications during delivery. About 1 in 10 babies is born preterm (before 37 weeks), and the majority of these require NICU care.

NICU care is extremely expensive, averaging $3,000-$4,000 per day. The total cost for a premature baby's NICU stay can exceed $100,000-$500,000 or more. Advances in neonatal medicine have dramatically improved survival rates: babies born at 28 weeks now have a survival rate of over 90%, and those born at 24 weeks survive about 60-70% of the time. Parents of NICU babies face significant emotional stress, and postpartum depression rates are higher among NICU parents.
