LOW RISKANNUAL

Annual Probability of Sewer Backup Into Home

~3%

Annual probability in US

About 3% of homes with sewer connections experience a sewer backup in a given year, causing an average of $5,000-$10,000 in damage.

|Type: GOVERNMENT

Sewer backups affect approximately 3% of homes connected to municipal sewer systems each year, causing an average of $5,000-$10,000 in cleanup costs and property damage. The Insurance Information Institute reports that water damage and freezing (which includes sewer backups) is the second most common homeowner insurance claim.

Common causes include tree root infiltration (the leading cause, as roots seek out moisture in sewer pipes), aging infrastructure (many US sewer pipes are 50-100+ years old), blockages from grease, wipes, and other debris, combined sewer overflows during heavy rain, and pipe collapse or bellying. Cities with older infrastructure experience the most problems.

Critical fact: standard homeowners insurance does NOT cover sewer backup. A separate sewer backup endorsement must be added, typically costing $40-$100 per year for $10,000-$25,000 in coverage. Prevention measures include installing a backwater prevention valve (required by code in some areas, costs $150-$1,000 for installation), avoiding flushing wipes (even those labeled "flushable"), regular sewer line inspection with a camera, and avoiding planting trees near sewer laterals. Annual sewer line cleaning for older homes can also prevent backups.
