According to Census data, approximately 710,000 same-sex married couples live in the United States, representing about 1.2% of all married couples. Same-sex marriages make up roughly 2% of new marriages annually. Since the Supreme Court's Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in 2015, over 500,000 same-sex marriages have been performed.

About 9.6% of LGBTQ+ adults in the US are married to a same-sex spouse. Among same-sex married couples, about 58% are female couples and 42% are male couples. Same-sex married couples are more likely to be interracial (about 20% vs 10% for different-sex couples) and more likely to both be in the workforce.

Research comparing same-sex and different-sex marriages has found that relationship quality, satisfaction, and stability are generally comparable. Some studies have found that same-sex couples tend to divide household tasks more equitably. Divorce rates for same-sex couples are roughly similar to or slightly lower than for different-sex couples, though the data is still limited given the relatively recent legalization.
