According to Pew Research Center, approximately 30% of American adults have used an online dating platform at some point, and about 18% are currently using one. Usage is highest among younger adults: 53% of those under 30 have used online dating, compared to about 37% of adults aged 30-49 and 20% of those 50-64.

Online dating has become the most common way for couples to meet, surpassing meeting through friends, at work, or in school. A Stanford University study found that about 39% of couples who got together in 2017-2019 met online, up from virtually 0% in 1995. About 12% of Americans say they have married or been in a committed relationship with someone they met on a dating platform.

The online dating industry generates about $5 billion per year in the US. While online dating has expanded the pool of potential partners and is particularly valuable for people in rural areas or specific communities, it also presents challenges including safety concerns (about 46% of users report negative experiences), catfishing, scams (romance scams cost victims $1.3 billion in 2022), and mental health impacts (some studies link heavy dating app use to lower self-esteem and increased anxiety).
